The city has a total land area of 160km2 and a total population of approximately 300.000 inhabitants in 2019. In the regional relations, Dung Quat - Van Tuong economic zone is about 30km to the North of the Quang Ngai city. Regarding long-term vision for Quang Ngai province in general and Quang Ngai City in particular, energy production and traditional heavy industries need to be relocated in this area in order to maximize the advantage of infrastructure, land fund, production chains as well as to mitigate potential risks on the urban environment. Along with this trend, Quang Ngai City needs to promote cooperation and technology transfer focusing on modern economic sectors based on high-level human resources and the competitive proximity to the city center. Following this vision, the revised general planning aims to evolving the traditional production activities to increase efficiency and economic value for current industrial and commercial activities while seeking new potentials and opportunities in the expanding sectors of the modern economy such as high-tech agriculture, renewable energy, health care and information technology. These proposals orient the transformation of the current industrial production activities into bio-cluster production clusters, bio-clusters, ecopoles, logistic services, R&D,... while preverving coastal, highland and vast remaining rural areas for agriculture and ecological tourism.
